The Dental Implant Process
The dental implant process typically advances in the following way:
- During your consultation, Dr. Donn will determine which type of smile restoration is ideal for you.
- You will meet with someone from our office to arrange your timeline.
- You will receive one or more supplemental procedures to enhance the surgical site. This is only necessary when recommended by Dr. Donn.
- Dr. Donn surgically places the implant fixture.
- During recovery, the fixture becomes fully integrated with your jawbone.
- Dr. Donn attaches the abutment and crown to the implant fixture.
Recovery from Implant Surgery
Placing your implant fixture is a minor procedure that is performed by Dr. Donn in our office. He creates a small hole to allow the implant fixture to attach to your jawbone.
Your implant fixture will become fully assimilated with your jawbone, creating a strong foundation for the implant. That’s why it’s important to take some time to rest following your surgery to allow your body to heal.
Our office will provide you with detailed written instructions on how to prepare for our implant surgery. But please feel free to call us if you have any concerns about your recovery.
You can anticipate some bleeding, swelling, and bruising for the first 72 hours following your dental implant surgery. The pain should reach its peak about six hours after surgery. Remember to take all medications as prescribed by Dr. Donn. You can also use an icepack for the first three days flowing surgery to counteract swelling.
Avoid These Things Following Implant Surgery
You should arrange to have someone pick you up after your implant surgery. You should also plan to take some time to rest and relax. It’s also important to avoid the following things for at least a week so you won’t aggravate the surgical site.
- Drinks containing alcohol
- Smoking and other tobacco products
- Hard or sharp-edged foods
- Strenuous physical activity
- Hot beverages
- Drinking through a straw
