Dental implants are quickly taking the place of dental bridges and dentures as the most popular and requested method of restoring missing teeth. This is because dental implants offer beautiful replacement teeth that work and feel just like natural teeth. And, dental implants can be used for a wide variety of different treatments. In fact, dental implants can even be used to support other restoration methods, giving our patients even more options when it comes to restoring their own missing teeth. Today, Dr. Craig S. Donn is blogging from his Cherry Hill and Camden County, NJ practice to talk about just some of the treatments available using dental implants.
A Treatment That Fits Your Needs
There are many different treatments that can be performed using dental implants. Some of these possible treatments include:
Single Tooth Restoration
If you are suffering from a single missing tooth, a single tooth restoration can be performed for you. For this method, a single implant fixture is placed in the empty spot left by your missing tooth during the procedure. During the recovery period, osseointegration occurs, which is the process of your implant fixture being accepted by your jawbone and gums as a natural part of your body. Once this process has finished, an abutment will be attached to your implant fixture and the replacement crown attached, completing the restoration.
Multiple Teeth Restoration
If you are suffering from multiple missing teeth, it is still possible to have a single tooth restoration performed for each missing tooth. However, if your missing teeth are lined up side by side in a row, an implant supported dental bridge may be a better treatment option. For this method, two implant fixtures are placed: one for the first missing tooth in the row and one for the last missing tooth in the row. Additional implant fixtures can be placed in between if extra support is needed. Once the fixtures have healed, an abutment is attached to each and the dental bridge connected, completing the restoration.
Full Arch Restoration
Much like with multiple teeth restorations, it is possible to replace every single missing tooth in an arch with a single tooth restoration. This can be very expensive, however, and an implant supported overdenture can be a much more affordable solution. For this method, four to six implants are placed along the arch. Once healed, an abutment is attached to each fixture and the overdenture connected at each point, completing the restoration.
